Dr. Belk was born September 19, 1937, to Vilas Blue and Emily Murray Belk in Macon, GA. Upon graduating from the Medical College of Georgia, Dr. Belk completed her residency at Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston, TX. Following, she returned to Augusta to began her medical career in private practice with Dr. William Wilkes. She later served as the Coordinator of Pediatric Education at University Hospital and was the Medical Director of Saint Joseph’s Hospice. Committed to lifelong learning, Dr. Belk continued her education at the University of South Carolina, earning her certification in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry. Her life was devoted to helping others. She frequently led seminars, taught classes, and gave speeches on subjects that were important to her. In 1978, she co-founded the Child Enrichment program which provided immediate care for abused children and eventually expanded services to help children heal and rebuild their lives. Today, the program has expanded to serve the Augusta judicial circuit, the Columbia judicial circuit, and the Toombs Judicial circuit.
Upon retirement, Dr. Belk relished in being with family, babysitting and spending time with the little ones, and taking on a new book ’to keep her mind sharp’ she would say. She has often made a point to boast, “My all-time favorite job was being nanny to my great-great niece.” In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death her sisters, Emily Belk and Barbara Belk Hutto.
