ELLAVILLE, GA --- Mr. Paul Hughes Palmer died early Monday morning, October 6, 2008 at Vista Care Center at Franciscan Woods in Columbus, GA. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at First Baptist Church in Americus with entombment to follow in the Ellaville Mausoleum. Rev. Rusty Mauldin and Rev. Keith Parks will officiate.

Mr. Palmer was born February 22, 1925 in Bleckley County, the son of E. M. and Susie Palmer. He attended Georgia Southwestern College and North Georgia College before entering the Air Force where he served as a First Lieutenant. Mr. Palmer completed his degree at Mercer University and taught school in Crisp County. He worked for Gulf Life Insurance Company before opening Ellaville Appliance and Gift Center in 1957 and the later established Trussco, Inc.

Mr. Palmer was an active member of the community. He served as Mayor of Ellaville for two separate terms. Mr. Palmer served on the board at South Georgia Technical College, as well as Flint River Hospital, and the Schley County Board of Health and Council on Aging. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Americus, GA.

Mr. Palmer is survived by his wife of 63 years, Hazel Ellis Palmer; one daughter and son in law, Kim and Glen Lawhorn of Ellaville; three granddaughters, Kay McCarty and her husband Brent, Traci Tondee and her husband Rusty, and Christy Tondee and her husband Shane, all of Ellaville. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Daniel McCarty, Josh Tondee, Tyler Tondee, Shelley Tondee and Christopher Tondee.

Pallbearers will include Daniel McCarty, Josh Tondee, Tyler Tondee, Christopher Tondee, Rick Roderick, and Raymond Holloman. Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 on Tuesday, October 8, 2008 at Watson-Giddens Funeral Home in Ellaville, GA.
