William D. McCorkle, Sr.

Mr. William D. McCorkle, Sr., 87, of Ellaville, GA, passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at Columbus Hospice in Columbus, GA. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Sunday, May 12, 2024, in the Chapel of Way-Watson Funeral Home with Rev. Tony Bankhead officiating. Music will be provided by Judy McClellan and Mr. Wayne Morrow, Sr. Burial will follow the service in Ellaville City Cemetery. The family will greet friends at Way-Watson Funeral Home in Ellaville one hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00PM

Mr. McCorkle was born on July 17, 1936, in Schley County, GA, to Joseph Winston McCorkle, Sr. and Mary Dwight Wall McCorkle Collins. He graduated from Mitchell County High School in 1954, and then attended Berry College. Mr. McCorkle was a member of Ellaville Methodist Church. He served the citizens of Schley County for several years as a County Commissioner.  Mr. McCorkle farmed his entire life and mainly focused on cattle, hogs, and planting row crops such as cotton, peanuts, soybeans, and corn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Winston McCorkle, Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mrs. Elene Beasley McCorkle of Ellaville, GA; two sons, William D. McCorkle, Jr. (Bobbie) and Roy McCorkle, both of Ellaville, GA; a daughter, Dr. Nancy McCorkle-McGwier of Gadsden, AL; a brother and sister-in-law, William Bryant Collins (Dinah) of Pelham, GA; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Nell Schueler (Bill) of Macon, GA; three grandchildren, Clate McGwier, Emily McCorkle, and Casey Buckner; and several nieces and nephews.
